Pine Island is one of the western region of Connemara's key attractions for landscape photography and one that I return to often. Next visit, April 2023.

The trees here are Scots Pine, a native evergreen tree that tends to grow tall and slender, it has red coloured wood and tends to add a lot of interest to landscape images of the west of Ireland.

Here we have a long exposure scene with reflection and some wind on Lough Derryclare's surface.

The west of Ireland - it has great people, great food, great entertainment and great scenery and that all makes for the perfect location for photography.

Wicklow in the morning, this is without doubt one of my favourite images.

Working on assignment for the Ritz-Carlton Hotel magazine I had the task to capture representative scenes of Ireland - landscapes, green, classic Dublin buildings.

Ireland makes for a fantastic photographic destination all year round. In the winter as you might not have imagined the landscape is not covered in snow although soft, white landscapes do occur - most notably in the mountains.

The winter also has magical light, with scenes just like this of the sea, mountains and low light.

On a recent photo tour of Dublin we stopped in to Trinity College, the famous university in the heart of Ireland's capital, to photograph some of the scenes to be found there.

Having lead many tours and workshops through Dublin I know that the college has many fine buildings. Now that December is here this Christmas tree in blue lights was a welcome addition to the end of our tour the main focus of which was the golden hour and blue hour light in the city.

Landscape photography is more than just photographing sunsets and sunrises, the crepuscular edges of the day when light is low and golden.

Often times this what a landscape photographer will avoid photographing because the subject matter is very cliché.

And it is true, along with waterfalls what do you think of when you think of landscape photography? Sunrises and sunsets most likely.

Movement can add to a landscape and travel image, if it is in context and adds to the final image.

During a recent photography workshop we stopped to photograph a woodland scene with thin, straight, tall beech trees growing from a moss-covered wet hummocky floor providing the interest, a path meandering that leads the eye.

The weather forecast was not favourable but was preferable to the following morning's forecast and other recent mornings where rain and heavily overcast conditions create conditions not of interest to the landscape photographer.

Sometimes it is easy to think of landscape photography in terms of the right light, the golden raking sunshine illuminating the countryside in front of the lens.

And it is true that landscapes with lighting like this are without doubt impressive and beautiful.

A return to County Cork took me to it's beautifully varied coastline that I have previously mentioned here.

Unlike on that previous occasion the weather was not cloudy and moody but bright and colourful highlighting the bright greens found in the littoral landscape.
