Ireland's Wild and Rugged Coastline

The wild, stormy and rugged coast of Ireland varies from sandy beaches to rocky headlands.

Here seen on one of the many stormy days driving wave after wave onto the coast, swirling white water draining over black rocks.

I often get asked about bad weather and photography such as is it possible to photograph on stormy days, what about 'bad' weather.

What is 'bad' weather? Weather affects the feeling of an image, there really is no such thing as bad weather in photography. A sunny image with calm seas can lack impact, even lighting is not as interesting as contrasty conditions typical of a stormy day and the motion of the ocean upon the shore is one of dramatic interest.

Storms bring waves, Ireland being a small island where you can only be 80 miles from the sea means a trip to the coast as seen in this image is very easy and worthwhile.

The challenge of landscape photography is of course to deal with the elements, anticipate the weather using knowledge and the forecasts and be ready to adapt to what local conditions are like.

Stormy days sometimes bring sunny weather between the windy, wet weather such as here on the Antrim Coast.

Street Photography in Dublin

Dublin is a great city for street photography, the small size and relaxed attitude of its inhabitants coupled with small cobbled streets and alleyways makes for many opportunities to photograph people on the Irish capital's streets.

Join me, Panoramic Ireland, to photograph the streets of Dublin on one of my photography workshops throughout the year.

See panoramicireland.com/dublin for more or use the contact form to enquire.

Pine Island, Connemara

Pine Island is one of the western region of Connemara's key attractions for landscape photography and one that I return to often. Next visit, April 2023.

The trees here are Scots Pine, a native evergreen tree that tends to grow tall and slender, it has red coloured wood and tends to add a lot of interest to landscape images of the west of Ireland.

Here we have a long exposure scene with reflection and some wind on Lough Derryclare's surface.

Workshop in the Woods of the West of Ireland

Mayo and Galway - my favourite part of the west of Ireland, is it yours?

I have written recently about leading photo tours in the west of Ireland and it being one of my favourite places on the island of Ireland. By the west of Ireland in this case I mean Galway and Mayo as distinct from the southwest which is Cork and Kerry or the northwest which comprises Donegal and Sligo.

Galway is Ireland's second largest county after Cork and Co. Mayo isn't small either. Driving across both of these counties you really do get a feel for their large size. The differing landscapes between Ballinasloe in the east of Co. Galway and Clifden, capital of Connemara in the west are obvious to the traveller.
