Storm Gerrit rolled in after Christmas this year, but in the calm between the storms with Pia denying Ireland a white Christmas, a break in the weather to give a beautiful Christmas Day sunset here in the west of Ireland.

Colour and cloud combined in the sky over Ireland's wild west as seen here.

2023 saw me photographing sunsets, sunrises and scenery from January to December.

Above, the latest gorgeous sunset and here another two.

One from the start of the year when there was little snow but enough here to be obvious in the landscape even if only at altitude.

And in the middle of the year, a late evening sunset of mountains, lakes and wooded islands.

October in Ireland

Are you visiting Ireland out of season? While most head to the Emerald Isle during the longer days of summer when temperatures are higher, the autumn, winter and spring offer much more interest photographically.

Recently I was asked what Ireland is like in October, is it worth coming to for photography and of course my answer was indeed it is worth visiting in October.

Here are some of my favourite images from Octobers over the years, a small selection but waterfalls and woodlands make up a lot of the locations.

April Heat Haze in Ireland, Rathlin Island

I have read a few articles recently, and many over the years, that in part mention how gloomy the weather is in Ireland, how you shouldn't move or holiday here because of the weather. Well, here is a fine April day of 17C to 19C temperatures on Rathlin Island off the Antrim Coast.

Pictured here is the East lighthouse, one of the island's three lighthouses, and in the background is the headland known as the Mull of Kintyre, just 10 miles beyond.

A warm and still day on one of Ireland's largest offshore islands, in April the heat haze is evident as seen below.

Join me, to photograph in Ireland throughout the year not just in hot and sunny weather but dark and gloomy weather too.

Tracks in the Snow, Ireland - February 2020

Just off the track through the snow, I found tracks and what looked like a good spot for a photograph so I headed up slope and into the deeper snow.

Only a fox had been through this part of the mountains since snow blanketed the heathery hillsides with fine, deep white powder.

I wandered for a while, photographed and spent time listening to the sounds of nature.

Exploring Ireland is filled with moments like these and other countless, priceless moments that make a visit to the Emerald Isle so special.

Join me to photograph in the snow, on long summer evenings, with autumn foliage or spring greens.
