The waterfall in autumn is a photographer's dream, heavy rainfall, colourful leaves and fewer tourists mean a more scenic adventure and better images to be made.

Here is one case in point, taken during a damp, dark few days in autumn.

I spent an hour walking along trails, following the signs towards the waterfall - until the signs stopped.

You've seen plenty of images here from the glorious spectacle that takes us from summer into winter so here is a short video from some of the places in which I have been photographing this autumn in Ireland.

Autumn, a time when we think of changing colour of leaves turning from green to red, to brown, to yellow, to orange.

But in the heart of Ireland's capital city, Dublin, we find buildings changing colour just as here in the image above.

Autumn, is there a more colourful time of year?

Here on a photography workshop we set out to find colourful woodlands and streams, here we found the perfect combination of both.

I wrote recently about a woodland stream in Ireland - see here - and how we photographed the colour of the watercourse as it flows through the autumnal woodland.

We're now rightly through December and on our way to the end of 2017.

At the start of the year I posted about my last foray of 2016 along laneways in rural Ireland here.

At the end of autumn, just a few weeks ago I was exploring another lane, this time in Northern Ireland.

The resulting images are both very different but both convey the same idea - what lies ahead on the journey.

The differences for me between the black and white last lane of 2016 and this, last lane of autumn are massive. My journey has taken me to three commissions by the biggest name in world publishing - The New York Times, working on travel articles as a photographer.

I have of course worked for many other famous names in travel including Easyjet, Ritz-Carlton and Ireland's Irish Times and the UK's Sunday Times.

Autumn is of course well known as a colourful time of year and without doubt Ireland has many colourful places in September, October and November - the three months traditionally associated with autumn here at this latitude.

On this occasion, a small river in spate with water flowing over salmon weirs, captured on a photography workshop in the Irish countryside.

I took a little drive along some randomly rambling roads recently, autumn had just begun bringing colour to the lush foliage, atmospheric conditions brought fog.

And here we have some more colour from the uplands of Ireland in Autumn.

Summer has finished in Ireland although a late burst of fine weather in late September is helping to make up for what was a disappointing few months; it was summer only in name.
