After sunset in Connemara

A stormy day in the west of Ireland with best conditions after dark

The Atlantic Ocean after sunset

A long day in Connemara, one of my favourite places in Ireland. A place that I could never get tired of and a great location for landscape and seascape photography. Beautiful.

Irish Trader - Baltray, Irish Sea

Wreck of The Irish Trader

Irish Trader Shipwreck, Baltray

I have often led photography workshops to the beach at Baltray for one reason - the shipwreck of the Irish Trader seen here surrounded by the Irish Sea on a very windy day.

The ship was run aground here in 1974 during storms in the Irish Sea and it has remained on the flat sandy beach ever since.

A Dublin Street Art Tour

Canvaz Street Art on the walls of Dublin

It has been a while since I have written about a photo tour so last week's walk around Dublin with Em from Australia makes a good reintroduction to the story of the day.

Dunluce Castle, Co. Antrim

Dunluce Cow, bovine landscapes of Co. Antrim

Cow of Dunluce

I took this image in 2006 in my native Northern Ireland. On a beautifully sunny June day with few tourists around. I often get asked if it is real, along with the header image on my Facebook page of this cow's fieldmate, both were taken on the same day and both are real rather than Photoshopped.

Long Exposure Photography Class Ireland

Panoramic Ireland - Photography Classes in Ireland

This year I am running several photography classes around the coast of Ireland, from Antrim to Dingle these classes are suitable for all levels from beginner to advanced and all you need is a camera. It doesn't matter what type of camera you have, there is no snobbery here.

Sunny Spring day on the Shannon

Ireland's longest river, the Shannon, is beautiful on a sunny spring day.

Sunny Spring on the Shannon

The longest river in Ireland or Britain, the River Shannon flows southwesterly from its source near the border with Northern Ireland beyond Limerick to the Atlantic Ocean on the west coast of Ireland, a distance of 360km.

Over the past year I have spent many days photographing on the Shannon, appreciating its calm waters, big skies, reeds and wildlife, this is an exciting place for a photographer. Reflections are the order of the day here.

Dublin Bay Morning

Scenic harbour, early morning on Dublin Bay

One of the highlights of a visit to Dublin is an early morning along the coast of the county. A short drive north to Howth and beyond or a short journey south will give you views across scenic Dublin Bay as the sun rises.

Long exposure photography using filters makes for some of the more interesting images.

Panoramic Ireland run photography workshops on the Dublin coast for all levels, seven days a week; a perfect location for sunrise photography. In the summer months it is possible to get here, spend some time getting great shots and get back to your hotel for breakfast.

West of Ireland - the lake at sunset

Lake at sunset in the west of ireland

The west of Ireland, lake at sunset.

With waves crashing ashore from westerly winds, it was bracing but not bitter. The colours coming from the sky more than made up for any shortcomings in air temperature and the views alone were breathtaking.

This was a scene that I had wanted to get for quite some time, to photograph this western lake on a great evening with plenty of atmosphere. I took a few exposures with this deviating from the typical landscape photographer's choice of long exposure, sometimes more drama can be created with a shorter exposure.

Saint Patrick's Day Dublin 2014

A short trip through Dublin after the 2014 St. Patrick's Day parade and festival from The Stag's Head to Temple Bar. I didn't visit the parade.

Like my last post on some of the locations associated with Ireland's patron saint, today as a Monday Saint Patrick's Day was always going to be a rowdy, raucous day coming as it did after a weekend's worth of drinking.

Sunset on the Shannon - a return with camera

On a recent trip to Galway in the west of Ireland I was delayed and returned late, too late to get anywhere and get anything done. On the motorway heading back towards the east of the country I watched the sunset in my rearview mirror and decided to take a detour to visit Ireland's longest river, the River Shannon.
