Sunny Spring day on the Shannon

Ireland's longest river, the Shannon, is beautiful on a sunny spring day.

Sunny Spring on the Shannon

The longest river in Ireland or Britain, the River Shannon flows southwesterly from its source near the border with Northern Ireland beyond Limerick to the Atlantic Ocean on the west coast of Ireland, a distance of 360km.

Over the past year I have spent many days photographing on the Shannon, appreciating its calm waters, big skies, reeds and wildlife, this is an exciting place for a photographer. Reflections are the order of the day here.

Sunset on the Shannon - a return with camera

On a recent trip to Galway in the west of Ireland I was delayed and returned late, too late to get anywhere and get anything done. On the motorway heading back towards the east of the country I watched the sunset in my rearview mirror and decided to take a detour to visit Ireland's longest river, the River Shannon.

Grand Canal, Dublin

The Grand Canal

Ireland's Grand Canal runs from the Grand Canal Dock in Dublin all the way to Shannon Harbour in the west of Ireland, a distance of 131km. Begun in 1756 to carry cargo to and from Dublin it is now exclusively used for tourism purposes with plenty of barges making the scenic journey through the heart of Ireland every year.
