Shannon Sunset

Sunset on Ireland's River Shannon

A recent photography workshop took me to the majestic River Shannon, the longest river in Ireland or Britain.

Sunset on the River Shannon, Ireland

Ireland's Midlands are often overlooked but provide plenty of photogenic locations and feature on Panoramic Ireland's photography experiences.

Here is the Shannon with the reflection of a post-sunset glow on the water. Not only was it scenic, it was atmospheric with only the gentle sounds of flowing water and the distant honking of geese.

A long drive to get here from our previous location, and stuck in heavy traffic, consider heavy traffic on a twisting Irish backroad, we were prevented from getting the sun before it went below the horizon, but despite this we were able to get our tripods out and set up quickly.

The colours were stunning, there was no-one else around and the river flowed gently on its 224 mile course from inland Ireland to the Atlantic Ocean; it was calm, serene and colourful.

The river formed after the last glacial period ended, some 10,000 years ago and it runs through 11 of Ireland's counties forming lakes along the way and it isn't difficult to see why the river was associated with the Celtic goddess Sionna from whom it takes its name.

Panoramic Ireland create photography experiences in Ireland including visiting the beautiful River Shannon at sunset - to find out more contact me via my social media channels (links to top right of page) or via the contact form on the website.
