Coumeenole Beach, Dingle

Ireland''s west coast, the Wild Atlantic Way conjures up images of stormy ocean waves and barren rocky headlands.

And for much of its 2,500 or so kilometres it is that way, but it isn't barren and not always rocky; it is visually scenic.

Panoramic Ireland returned to Dingle recently for a photography workshop in one of Ireland's most beautiful places.

Here is the famous Coumeenole beach, complete with gull and those gentle waves that the Atlantic sometimes gives us. To the right is the rocky headland of Dunmore Head and the Blasket Islands beyond.

Check Out Those Sun Rays

After a long day of photography in the Irish countryside, nothing can be better than watching and photographing the sunset.

I have of course written about sunsets here on Panoramic Ireland before, here is a link to some sunset images from when I was undergoing chemotherapy and recovery from a cancer operation this year, sunset was easy to photograph.

This week's Guess the Location comes from a more famous, and guessable location in Ireland.

Last week, plenty of you guessed right as the image being from one of Dublin's many bridges.

This week, the tower seen here is silhouetted against the sunset sky, it's a well-known tower in a very well-known location.

Can you guess the location? Answer in the comments below or ask for clues.

The Sun Sets on Another Day

As the sun sets on another day, after photographing some of Ireland's fine landscapes and scenes we turned our attention to the setting sun and these trees and buildings silhouetted against the bright blue sky.

The coast of Ireland is perfect for landscape or seascape photography, and perfect for relaxation too.

Here, a stormy Atlantic sunset over County Kerry's Blasket Islands makes you just want to stop and watch. Which is what we did on a photo tour to Ireland's most westerly peninsula, Dingle.

Light is important in photography, especially in landscape photography.

I have written about the difference in light and its effects on the look and feel of a landscape image here.

The two images in this post is from one of my favourite places in Ireland, the west coast - taken two nights apart.

Cancer, Chemotherapy and my Camera

Sunset from one of my favourite vantage points, looking west towards the setting sun.

It has been a difficult year so far, 2019, a diagnosis of cancer in January, an operation to remove a large tumour and this week, at the end of March, chemotherapy.

At each stage as throughout the past 20 years, photography has been a big part of my life.

As the Sun Sets - Sunset in Ireland

Sunsets are a strange thing, amazing to watch and enjoy yet many feel that they are not worthy of a place in landscape photography.

It's an interesting idea, the concept of not photographing one of the most spectacular, and common, natural events that you can witness.

Never the same twice, the sunset can give us plenty to think about as photographers of landscapes, as artists and as travellers in a foreign land and opportunities to work on photographic and artistic skills.

Crepuscular rays shining from behind late evening clouds in the west of Ireland

Towards sunset or sunrise as the angle of sunlight is low in the sky, rays shining across the sky illuminating dust in the atmosphere create crepuscular rays, a series of parallel beams of light that appear to converge on or indeed emerge from the sun.

The upper rays seen here, beaming across the sky are crepuscular rays.

Wisping Pink Cloud over Mountains at Sunset in Ireland

The beauty of landscapes, it's not just the famous places that should attract the photographer's attention.

In fact, the hidden places are what makes Ireland an amazing landscape photography destination.

Those famous places are without doubt, scenically stunning - the Giant's Causeway in my own native county for instance, the Dingle Peninsula - Ireland's most westerly point, both of these places are amazingly beautiful and amongst the most scenic in the world. Ireland has no shortage of world-class scenic locations but most of them are not well known.
