Photography in Stormy Weather, Ireland

Sometimes it is easy to think of landscape photography in terms of the right light, the golden raking sunshine illuminating the countryside in front of the lens.

And it is true that landscapes with lighting like this are without doubt impressive and beautiful.

An afternoon timelapse

An afternoon in the west of Ireland with sun rays and waves from a Galway lake.

I waited as the camera exposed a few long exposures and afterwards set a faster shutter speed to capture the sunlight bursting through the clouds. Alongside this I captured a timelapse of various lake scenes from the west of Ireland.

This video is a timelapse taken on one stormy November afternoon in 2014.

A Western Panorama

A Western Panorama from Panoramic Ireland

Shadows of two photographers on a ridge in the Irish mountains

The shadows of two walkers can be seen traversing a ridge between two mountains in the west of Ireland in this image from my Panoramic Ireland series. The shadows belong to me and a visiting photographer, on a photography tour of Northern Ireland initially we then headed on to Sligo, Galway and Mayo in the west of Ireland extending the tour by four days.

Wild Atlantic Way Sunset, Connemara

Another tour of Connemara

After a few weeks of travelling (more to come on that) I am back in Ireland and led a photo tour in Connemara with MC from New Zealand last week.

The weather was fine, stormy at times and very windy in places but with plenty of cloud action to keep the skies interesting.

After sunset in Connemara

A stormy day in the west of Ireland with best conditions after dark

The Atlantic Ocean after sunset

A long day in Connemara, one of my favourite places in Ireland. A place that I could never get tired of and a great location for landscape and seascape photography. Beautiful.

Stormy Atlantic Ocean, West Coast of Ireland

A Stormy Atlantic Ocean, February 2014, Connemara, Ireland

Stormy Atlantic Ocean 2014 Connemara, Ireland

Another day on the Wild Atlantic Way of Ireland's west coast, this time the day happens to be one of the stormiest in living memory in Ireland. With a tornado in Athleague, Co. Roscommon, almost 200,000 homes without power, 160km/h winds and trees falling on vehicles all over Ireland it was certainly an eventful day for some.

Connemara Reflection

It's no secret that I really do like Connemara.

Connemara Pony

Connemara

Researching locations for a photography workshop can be very rewarding, especially if the location is in the west of Ireland. Here in Connemara there is notonly a land of bog, mountain and sky but also a land of machair, ponies, and the sea, or, in this case, the Atlantic Ocean.

Bog, mountain and sky in Connemara

Connemara or Conamara

The western part of County Galway, situated west of Lough Corrib, is known as Connemara.

It's a land of bog, mountains, sea and sky. This image is taken from a single track bog road on the way to the edge of Ireland, the edge of Europe on the Atlantic Coast.

As I made my way across the bog towards the small lake pictured in this image, I was shadowed by the vertical flight of the skylark hovering in the clouds above me, warbling its distinctive call.

An Evening in the West of Ireland

On a recent evening spent photographing in 'the West', that's the west of Ireland, Connemara to be exact, after sunset I was looking for something extra to capture. A small babbling brook, or something other than the scenic landscapes that had made up the bulk of my subject matter hither to.

I happened upon a small harbour on the edge of a lake, with a boat moored and some great reflections but I thought this location would be best photographed in the morning and it was now 22:00 in late June, bright but with no direct sunlight.
