I have been photographing rainbows a lot of late, with the recent stormy weather here in Ireland.

Sometimes, as here in this image the journey is as scenic as the destination.

On our way to a photography workshop in the west of Ireland, heavy rain arrived - contrary to the forecast for the day, so we stopped to photograph what was only one of many scenic roads on our Wild Atlantic Way drive.

This section of narrow, twisty road was perfect as it was lined with trees and radiated fresh green colour on the overcast day.

This brings into focus, excuse the pun, what to do when the weather forecast doesn't go to plan - be ready to adapt.

The West of Ireland is a perfect location for landscape photography, thankfully it's a place that I know very well.

Rugged mountains, wide open landscapes and plenty of interesting sky as well as the culture and heritage of the western seaboard make this area worthy of a visit but specifically for the photographer it has everything to offer.

Ireland's climate brings lots of mixed weather and with that mixed weather comes the potential for rainbows.

Here while out on a photography tour with BY from the Pacific Northwest of the USA, we were greeted with this scene after a little bit of a rain shower.

Sometimes the weather isn't just perfect. 

More than the occasional storm passes over Ireland, here's I went out to photograph the end of a storm on the Irish Sea close to Dublin.

Waterfalls look at their best in spring or autumn with fresh green leaves or fall colour being situated often, but not always, in woodland settings.

Now, at the end of autumn I will probably not visit many waterfalls until spring, there are a few that I will photograph over the course of the winter but none like this.

Here, the small waterfall looks good after a long few days of rain.

The waterfall in autumn is a photographer's dream, heavy rainfall, colourful leaves and fewer tourists mean a more scenic adventure and better images to be made.

Here is one case in point, taken during a damp, dark few days in autumn.

I spent an hour walking along trails, following the signs towards the waterfall - until the signs stopped.

I'm a photographer, I'm also a tour leader, geographer and explorer.

I was thinking today about exploration and how, sometimes, a day's exploration can bring unexpected results.

Here, a short walk along a riverbank turned into more of an adventure than I had planned on, traversing the river and climbing over rocks brought me to this picturesque section of the watercourse, lined with autumnal leaves and this fallen tree that made for a good place to stop and set up my tripod.

The bridge has two names, Daly's Bridge is the official title but it is mostly known to Corconians as the Shakey Bridge.

The bridge is due for refurbishment, they will remove it and carry out repairs to replace it late in 2019.

Threecastles, County Wicklow - Ireland

I've been out photographing in the Irish countryside in recent weeks as autumn makes its way across Ireland.

On one of the bright blue-sky days I stopped at Threecastles in County Wicklow, south-west of Dublin.
