The green roads or lanes of Ireland are impressive but can often be quite hard to find.

They are unlike other small country roads in Ireland, they don't have a metalled surface, they weave between fields through the Irish landscape but often have become disused or paved over. These green roads often would have been routes between townlands, forming part of the cultural landscape of Ireland.

Today they are important for wildlife, with hedgerows providing wildlife cover, berries and seeds for winter and with limited traffic - usually walkers, cows and horses are the only passers-by now.

Green roads give character to an area and provide a link to our past as well as being incredibly scenic.

It's now mid-September and we are of course past the end of summer in Ireland.

Here, a scene from a summer journey along one of Ireland's least visited counties, County Cavan, home to scenic roads like this.

I couldn't travel fast on this road (why would anyone want to?) but it made the journey to my destination much more interesting and enjoyable.

And my journey was indeed slow, not just because of the road but also the need to stop frequently to photograph.

Green Roads, Red Berries in Ireland

Green roads are a favourite place for Panoramic Ireland and what better time than late summer or autumn to visit these scenic conduits through the Irish countryside.

Here red hawthorn berries, blackberries, ash trees, ivy and many other points of interest fill the scene in a rich scene from Ireland's west.

What better place to visit on a cloudy day in Autumn?

Join Panoramic Ireland to photograph green roads, Irish landscapes and the fine cityscapes of Ireland.

Autumn on Ireland's Green Roads

Autumn has arrived this week with the passing on the 22nd of September of the Equinox and the arrival of cold weather, minus temperatures and frosts overnight.

The Irish landscape is still green though, and the fresh weather is bringing quite a bit of blue sky.

Here, a green road or country lane meanders through the rolling green hills of the Irish countryside.

Ireland has plenty of famous avenues, the Dark Hedges being one, but those without hordes of people are those that I prefer.

Join me, Panoramic Ireland, for a photographic adventure in Ireland - from the coast to the mountains.
