There are many elements that go into creating an image.

There's the old favourites such as composition, shutter speed, aperture and so on. Then there's location; but often patience is the key element required in photography, particularly landscape or seascape photography such as in the image seen above.

Here a scene from a coastal landscape photography workshop on Ireland's Wild Atlantic Way in Dingle, County Kerry. This is Star Wars filming territory and on this occasion we spent quite some time waiting for the rain to pass us by and when it did, we were greeted with this scene looking across the Atlantic towards neighbouring Iveragh.

Stunning and worth the wait I'm sure you'll agree.

I often get asked in advance of photography tours and workshops "What will we do if it rains, do you have a contingency?", well yes we will usually photograph something majestic, because it is in the stormy mixed weather conditions we often get in Ireland that we see the most atmospheric light. The ephemeral rays of sunshine lighting up a portion of the scene in the distance, a bright sky that tells of the drama that has passed or is about to pass.

We can't always promise great weather but always a great time photographing the landscapes and street scenes of Ireland.

Another of my favourite workshops from 2017 was this one from County Kerry, here we have the bright summer sun shining over County Kerry's famous Dingle Peninsula - probably the most popular non-Dublin destination in Ireland.

In the distance the mountains of Kerry can be seen, the highest amongst these are the Macgillycuddy's Reeks with Ireland's highest mountain Carrauntuohill. On the right of the image the Atlantic Ocean sitting between the Iveragh and Dingle peninsulae.

Killarney, Ireland's original tourist destination town is as scenic as it gets anywhere in the country.

Situated on a lake - Lough Leane, and surrounded by mountains including Ireland's highest Carrauntoohil this is a place that has seen a lot of cameras and photographers over the decades since the invention of photography.

As I was leading a photography workshop in Killarney I took an extra day for myself and captured some footage of Lough Leane a bronze age copper mining area, the cloud-topped mountains and the rowers, swans and other wildlife using the lake in the late evening.

The video finishes with an image of Ross Castle, an Irish tower house that dates from the late 15th century. It is typical of many fortified dwellings from the period when defence was important - outer walls, portcullis, thick tower walls, narrow windows and arrow loops amongst other such mechanisms. The castle is restored and can be visited. It has artificial lighting at night and looks well.

Ireland's Wild Atlantic Way stretches for 2,500km along the country's Atlantic seaboard from Cork in the south to Donegal in the north.

Here is one small section of that coastline, in County Clare when on a photography workshop we stopped to photograph the delights of this county well known for traditional music, archaeology and Father Ted.

As I mentioned in previous posts, this week saw me returning to Dingle in Ireland's southwest.

And I wasn't disappointed, neither of course was JM who joined me from the USA for one of my one-to-one photography workshops in Ireland.

I have been spending time photographing and leading photography workshops recently in Dingle, Ireland's most westerly peninsula in County Kerry.

Here is an image of the Atlantic, its waves crashing up over ancient rocks under a stormy sky.

One of the southwest of Ireland's most iconic buildings, Ross Castle is a tower house or fortified dwelling dating from the late 1400s and is typical of the architecture of the period - wealthy and powerful families lived in such defensive structures.

Seen here after sunset as the blue hour approaches, clouds race across the sky and the waters of the river run calm to give a good, but not perfect, reflection with its bright artificial lights.

The late night landscapes of County Kerry last week were the same colour as David Bowie's room - blue, blue, electric blue.

Here, after a long day of photographing the south west of Ireland, the sun had set and light was fading leaving a bright blue to envelop the landscape on the Wild Atlantic Way.

A beautiful and colourful sight I'm sure you will agree.

Pine Island is one of the western region of Connemara's key attractions for landscape photography and one that I return to often. Next visit, April 2023.

The trees here are Scots Pine, a native evergreen tree that tends to grow tall and slender, it has red coloured wood and tends to add a lot of interest to landscape images of the west of Ireland.

Here we have a long exposure scene with reflection and some wind on Lough Derryclare's surface.

Situated at the northern tip of the Fanad peninsula in northern Donegal, Ireland's most northerly county, Fanad Lighthouse is undoubtedly one of the most scenic in Europe.

The stormy, but as seen here calm, waters of the Atlantic stretch thousands of miles beyond the horizon and distant mountains are visible in many directions.

This lighthouse is photographed more often than most others in Ireland and is a perfect location in a part of Ireland full of interest for landscape photography.
