Walking along the laneway in winter, not as enjoyable as in spring when the green leafy colour lines the hedgerows and fresh scents fill the air, but still on a cold winter's day the reminders of last season's life are there.

A Peaceful Moment

On a recent journey on the Irish Sea, having left port we passed a windfarm with many turbines and on the calm surface of the sea a dolphin gently breaks.

Landscape photography is not always about epic hikes and early starts, the beauty of the landscape is often right there in front of us at any time of day.

Newgrange, the greatest of Ireland's ancient monuments is aligned with the winter solstice on December 21st.

For much of the past 5,200 years on the shortest day of the year in the northern hemisphere, the ancient people of Ireland have gathered inside the mound at Newgrange where the rising sun's rays illuminated the 19m-long passageway and burial chamber decorated with stone carvings.

On a recent photo tour of Dublin we stopped in to Trinity College, the famous university in the heart of Ireland's capital, to photograph some of the scenes to be found there.

Having lead many tours and workshops through Dublin I know that the college has many fine buildings. Now that December is here this Christmas tree in blue lights was a welcome addition to the end of our tour the main focus of which was the golden hour and blue hour light in the city.

It was an hour before sunset and heavy rain was doing its best to disrupt the photography workshop with CT from the USA.

The rain was also helping to keep this lake full and the islands floating in the thick fog.

Yesterday I took a hike in the mountains of Ireland, the sun was shining and temperatures were low.

As I cleared the top of mountain and looked across the landscape - instead of seeing a landscape of green I found what I might probably consider to be my favourite image of the year.

We have passed the equinox, this year on the 22nd of September in Ireland.

The equinox is the point of the year when day length equals night length, so twelve hours each.

The coast, my favourite subject matter as a photographer.

And there is plenty of choice with several thousands of kilometres of coastline to photograph.

Here, wave after wave washes up upon the rocks, too many times to count and every time a little less remains.
