Castles and Cows, Harry Avery's Castle

Written by
Castles and cows, Harry Avery's Castle, County Tyrone Castles and cows, Harry Avery's Castle, County Tyrone

Situated in the corner of County Tyrone, Northern Ireland's largest county, the remains of Harry Avery's castle sit atop a hill on the edge of a valley.

The twin structures projecting up here were actually an unusual tower house rather than an outer defensive gatehouse.

Belonging to a 14th century Irish chieftain it was destroyed in the early 17th century by English forces who took stone from the site.

This scene reminded me of another castle, more famous, from my own County Antrim which I also photographed with a cow in front: https://panoramicireland.com/photo-tours-blog/cow-in-front-of-dunluce-castle-causeway-coast-antrim-northern-ireland

    Thanks Michael,

It sounds like a great trip, how long were you here for?

I saw Europe and photographed them in 2015 in Dublin.

Fantastic photos. After a wonderful visit to Belfast and making friends there, I stopped at the castle that bears my last name.....Avery.

What a great region and people. I was lucky enough to make good friends while dropping into a boxing gym for a workout in Belfast. The owner of the gym, Brian Magee actually set me up with an airbnb his buddy owned. After I got settled up we all met up in downtown Belfast and went to see Europe perform at the Ulster Hall.

As I'm writing this I'm actually listening to Van Morrison as well. If I'm not mistaken and didn't have too much of the drink, I bel8eve we stopped off at a bar owned by Van the Man. Haha. Man I really loved Northern Ireland. Nothing but great memories.

*pardon my run on sentences and bad grammar. Just excited to see these photos.
