Ireland isn't always awash with colour

Written by

It's known as the Emerald Isle, and Ireland certainly lives up to that moniker with plenty of colour (especially green) all year round.

What to photograph in Ireland on an overcast day?

However, there are plenty of days when it's difficult to get that stereotypical landscape image. Ireland isn't always awash with colour and vivid greens.

So what does a photographer photograph on an overcast day?

Some views just don't suit an overcast day, but there are thankfully plenty of places that do suit a misty morning or overcast afternoon.

This image was taken this morning along Ireland's east coast, the lack of direct sunlight provides a soft and balanced light with colours very close to the real thing. It's not all gloomy when the Sun doesn't shine.

The scene is one of a natural environment created by man. The creation of coastal defences and other engineering works associated with harbours and marinas often can often destroy the coastline around such works, but in some cases new land is formed and this becomes a haven for wildlife.

It is to a location such as this that I venture on an overcast day.

It's not instantly recognisable as Ireland, but it is Ireland.

Panoramic Ireland create and lead photography experiences throughout Ireland, on sunny days and overcast days. Even on rainy days, it's always fun.
