The last time I was through here my car had a stuck brake caliper and I used the water from this river to cool the disc to release the pads. This is not a recommendation of what to do in the same situation but it certainly solved my problem of getting cross country without the front of the car going on fire. If you aren't very careful it is possible to crack a brake disc using water to cool it, and that's an expensive repair.
Here too the river, often spread wide across its small floodplain, still occupies land beyond its banks. Thankfully nothing is built in the zone of potential flooding, unlike in other parts of Ireland where a river in spate can cause serious destruction to towns built along its banks. Probably because even here in the summer this river is unpredictable, so often flooded in recent years that the tree in this scene has finally succumbed to inundation of its roots.
Calm water on the edge of the river passed over what should be green fields reflecting the drama in the sky; the deep, dark, fast flow was mesmerising.
In the sky above thick clouds blocked out direct sunlight but didn't bring rain; the woodland trees on the other side of the river compete, racing skywards for ever more light.
