Photography in Black and White

Written by
An Irish River Landscape in Black and White An Irish River Landscape in Black and White Darren McLoughlin

The late spring and early summer of 2015 has so far been quite wet in the west of Ireland, in fact a recent visit to a lake that I know very well showed that the levels were higher than those at the same time last year; this is despite some parts of Ireland being extremely dry. Dublin had only 17% of its Long Term Average (LTA) rainfall in June 2015. May, however, was very wet with some parts of the west recording over 200% of the LTA and Knock Airport had its dullest May since 1996.

All the recent rain and cloudy skies make for a difficult but always entertaining time for the dedicated outdoors photographer.

Today I revisited a river in the west that I have been to often but not in recent times. And this time I took some photos of the peaceful surroundings of my rest stop.

The last time I was through here my car had a stuck brake caliper and I used the water from this river to cool the disc to release the pads. This is not a recommendation of what to do in the same situation but it certainly solved my problem of getting cross country without the front of the car going on fire. If you aren't very careful it is possible to crack a brake disc using water to cool it, and that's an expensive repair.

Here too the river, often spread wide across its small floodplain, still occupies land beyond its banks. Thankfully nothing is built in the zone of potential flooding, unlike in other parts of Ireland where a river in spate can cause serious destruction to towns built along its banks. Probably because even here in the summer this river is unpredictable, so often flooded in recent years that the tree in this scene has finally succumbed to inundation of its roots.

Calm water on the edge of the river passed over what should be green fields reflecting the drama in the sky; the deep, dark, fast flow was mesmerising.

In the sky above thick clouds blocked out direct sunlight but didn't bring rain; the woodland trees on the other side of the river compete, racing skywards for ever more light.
