Autumn in Ireland: We're Back in the Colourful Time of Year
Autumn is here again in Ireland, and the countryside is beginning to take on those familiar shades of yellow, orange and gold.
Autumn is here again in Ireland, and the countryside is beginning to take on those familiar shades of yellow, orange and gold. Woodlands are particularly rewarding at this time of year, especially where a small river winds its way through the trees and the changing leaves catch the light.
I’ve spent decades finding my way through the Irish countryside, photographing quiet, lesser-known locations as well as the famous landscapes and landmarks that bring visitors here.
Some of my favourite places to photograph in Ireland aren’t famous landmarks or recognised viewpoints. They’re simply quiet stretches of woodland, small rivers and changing light, places that might otherwise go unnoticed.
This photograph is one of those places. The river draws the eye through the woodland, the trees frame the scene and the autumn colours bring warmth to the landscape; sunlight filtering through the canopy adds another layer, illuminating some areas while leaving others in shadow.
It’s a reminder that you don’t always need a dramatic mountain, a spectacular coastline or a famous location to find a worthwhile photograph in Ireland. Sometimes the most interesting scenes are the quieter ones you discover along the way.
And autumn is a particularly good time to go looking for places like this.
Join me to photograph scenes like these in Ireland. You know where to find me.
