Antrim Coast at Sunrise

An early morning trip to Northern Ireland's famous Antrim Coast, my home county I was born and brought up not too far from the Giant's Causeway and Dark Hedges that are now enjoying a level of world-famousness that has taken most of us by surprise.

Don't get me wrong, these are definitely world class locations and worthwhile seeing but for decades this part of Ireland was ignored by all except those who lived here and news reporters. There certainly wasn't much in the way of tourism.

It is an area that I enjoy photographing and even though I thought that the day would bring some good weather it was cloudy and stormy. That is not a bad thing, especially on a day that I was the only photographer out and about on this stretch of the coast.

By the time that I had got my images of the sea, all the while the wind battering me and the waves battering the shoreline, it started to rain. Rain and wind is a bad combination, and heading back to shelter I see a rainbow, then a second rainbow. A double rainbow appeared over the sea and I manage to get a quick few shots before the camera gets so wet it looks like it has been in the sea. I would love to have spent a few more moments getting a good panoramic of this rainbow but it just wasn't going to happen.

Moving on along the coast, plenty of big waves were crashing in every part that I stopped and I get some more images at this location along with a quickly taken iPhone panorama of the double rainbow.

Don't forget that I am now running regular photography workshops and tours on the Antrim Coast, see my page about it here and send me an email to ask more.
