Workshop in the Woods of the West of Ireland

Mayo and Galway - my favourite part of the west of Ireland, is it yours?

I have written recently about leading photo tours in the west of Ireland and it being one of my favourite places on the island of Ireland. By the west of Ireland in this case I mean Galway and Mayo as distinct from the southwest which is Cork and Kerry or the northwest which comprises Donegal and Sligo.

Galway is Ireland's second largest county after Cork and Co. Mayo isn't small either. Driving across both of these counties you really do get a feel for their large size. The differing landscapes between Ballinasloe in the east of Co. Galway and Clifden, capital of Connemara in the west are obvious to the traveller.

As a long time traveller in my own country, I know a lot of the country north and south - from Kenmare to Coleraine. For those of you unfamiliar with the geography of Ireland, Kenmare is in Co. Kerry, Coleraine is in Co. Derry. I have lived in all four provinces of Ireland - Ulster, Munster, Connacht and Leinster. For some reason Connacht is often misspelled as Connaught by old maps and BBC presenters. Galway and Mayo are counties in the province of Connacht and this is the province with the highest number of Irish speakers in Ireland.

On a recent photo tour in Galway in Mayo we had some of the most dramatic weather over a few days, that is normal for this part of the world but it also provides some of the best conditions for landscape photography. Nothing stays the same, and that is really what you want. Why would you want to go look out at the same scene over and over?

Woodland Scene from Co. Mayo. Ireland

A typical photo tour in this part of Ireland would consist of woodlands, lakeland scenes which almost double as seascapes given the size of the lakes in Ireland. Lough Corrib is the second largest lake in Ireland or Britain, Lough Mask is the third largest lake in these islands.

The main image on this post along with the others contained here are some of my favourite from an autumnal day in these lands of the west, October 2013. The autumn and winter are the best times to be here in Ireland for photography, the short days and low light are perfect for landscape and seascape photography.

All breathtaking views but my favorites are the walkway and waterfall, so unbelievably beautiful. I look forward to visiting Ireland and seeing all of it for myself.
